5th Edition Tratar o cancro por tu

Five years after the start of the “Tratar o cancro por tu” initiative, and with 24 sessions already held, bringing together more than 3,500 participants in 15 cities, Ipatimup is back “on the road” to once again talk about, raise awareness about, and share knowledge about cancer with the public. From January 13 to March 12, Ipatimup scientists and some of the best local specialists will be in Matosinhos, Guarda, Évora, Viana do Castelo, Guimarães, and Angra do Heroísmo. In this edition, the themes focus on prevention, early detection, and cancer treatment, and the highlight will be the presence of the director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Elisabete Weiderpass, at the opening session in Matosinhos.

Despite significant advances in cancer prevention and access to cancer care, Europe, Elisabete Weiderpass emphasizes, “continues to face major challenges in terms of the occurrence of new cancer cases. These numbers need to be reversed.” In this sense, the researcher adds, the scientists and clinicians who participate in the sessions of the “Treating Cancer Directly” initiative, “by speaking directly to citizens with clarity, empathy and truth, are essential to breaking taboos and promoting access to information, contributing to a more effective strategy for cancer prevention and control.”

For Elisabete Weiderpass, the strategy used in the “Tratar o cancro por tu” sessions—using accessible language – “allows everyone to understand the risks, prevention options, and available treatments. When we speak without fear, we give people the tools to act, decide, and take care of their health autonomously.”

Portugal recently became an official member of the IARC, a branch of the World Health Organization dedicated to the study of oncological diseases, and Elisabete Weiderpass is keen to leave a message of hope and commitment to the Portuguese people and all participants in the “Treating Cancer from a Closer Perspective” sessions: “Science is advancing, care is improving, and together we can make a difference. Information is power, and initiatives like this are an important step towards a future with less suffering and more prevention.”

The IARC director also emphasizes the importance of screenings for the early detection of cancer: “They allow us to identify risks and act before the disease develops, saving lives.” To reinforce public acceptance, it is essential to invest in clear, scientifically based communication campaigns that explain the benefits – and risks – of screenings and combat the fear and stigma associated with cancer.

In this new cycle of in-person sessions on cancer literacy, which continue to place patients at the center of the discussion, pathologist and researcher Manuel Sobrinho Simões, director of Ipatimup and host of this initiative, joins us as usual. For the scientist, these sessions are a fundamental contribution to reversing the current figures that point to an increase in new cancers: “The focus on knowledge for people with neoplastic disease involves changing behavior towards prevention and early diagnosis, without abandoning the importance of complexity in the context of personalized medicine.”

In the 2026 edition, the themes will be: “Early detection: the impact of cancer screenings” (Matosinhos), “Precision oncology medicine: innovative medicines and how to access these medicines” (Guarda), “The role of heredity: the importance of family history and genetic studies” (Évora), “Environment, behavior and cancer: understanding to prevent” (Viana do Castelo), “Cancer diagnosis: from biopsy to clinical decision” (Guimarães) and “Cancer prevention: main risk factors” (Angra do Heroísmo).

Each of the six sessions will be the subject of a podcast on Antena 1, which will be available on RTP PLAY, as well as on various streaming platforms.

An initiative of Ipatimup, carried out in partnership with Antena 1, and with RTP and Jornal de Notícias as media partners, this year with the support of Merck Portugal and Roche.
