Ipatimup tours the country again to “Tratar o cancro por tu”
After two highly successful editions, the Ipatimup initiative “Tratar o cancro por tu” once again goes beyond the walls of science, laboratories and clinics to travel the country and debate with the population the most recent scientific and medical advances in the area. of cancer. In 2024, between January and April, Ipatimup scientists and some of the best local experts will be in six cities to talk about prostate, breast, colon, endocrine system, lung and pediatric tumors.
In this new cycle of face-to-face sessions on cancer literacy, the objective is to debate scientific advances and the most recent therapies, simplify concepts, raise awareness of the need for early diagnosis and prevention, placing patients at the center of the discussion. The first session, on prostate cancer, will take place in Porto, on January 18th, at 6:30 pm, in the Auditorium of the Almeida Garrett Library, and has already confirmed the presence of the Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, and the special participation by musician Pedro Abrunhosa.
The second session, on breast cancer, will be on February 1st, in Aveiro. This is followed by sessions on colon cancer, in Funchal, on endocrine tumors, in Covilhã, lung cancer, in Braga, and pediatric tumors, in Faro. Sessions will always be on Thursdays, at 6:30 pm.
Some of the best national experts have joined the initiative once again, with emphasis on the presence of Prof. Manuel Sobrinho Simões, director of Ipatimup. In 2024, we also have the special participation of the theater and performing arts association of Matosinhos Colibri Arts&Culture, which will present an artistic performance created especially for these sessions
With these sessions, explains José Carlos Machado, member of the Ipatimup Board of Directors, «our objective is to inform and clarify some misconceptions about cancer. Having cancer does not mean dying. Although the number of cancer cases is expected to increase by around 50 percent by 2040, the rate of cancer deaths will fall by around two percent per year, showing that scientific and medical advances in prevention and treatment have given results. These sessions are for everyone, because we can all get cancer.
One of the most important things we know is that a well-informed cancer patient is a patient more likely to be cured. Information is a powerful weapon in the fight against cancer».
At the beginning of 2024, the book “Tratar o cancro por tu” will also be released. With scientific coordination by Manuel Sobrinho Simões, editorial coordination by Luísa Melo, Nuno Marcos and Nuno Ribeiro and edition by Idioteque, the book brings together the fundamental contents of the first two editions of the event and aims to be another way of promoting cancer literacy, in order to reach an even wider audience.
“Tratar o cancro por tu” will therefore be within everyone’s reach. Each of the six sessions will give rise to a podcast on Antena1, which will be available on RTP PLAY, as well as on various streaming platforms.
The events are held in partnership with Antena1, RTP and Roche Foundation Medicine, also with the support of Merck.
